Ajwain seeds is a member of the Umbelliferae family, which includes dill, caraway and cumin. It was originally from the Eastern Mediterranean but it has spread to the near east. Now, Ajwain is native to India, but is also cultivated in Iran, Egypt Pakistan and Afghanistan. Ajwain seeds are used in savory Indian, Pakistani, and Middle-Eastern cooking. Not only are the seeds used in cooking but as the main source of the essential oil Thymol. It also goes by the names carom and bishop's weed. Ajwain in Ayruveda is considered to be effective in treating indigestion.
